Orkid Ria Seafood Restaurant

There is a stretch of Pantai Cenang that is especially jam-packed with restaurants and souvenir stores and this is where you’ll find the brightly-lit Orkid Ria. This popular seafood eatery is one of the most expensive along Pantai Cenang and its main draw is its extensive menu. Try the black pepper tiger prawns, deep-fried squid and garlic kalian – the fare is slightly pricey yet the restaurant is almost always crowded; come early or expect to wait for a table.

Red Tomato Splash Beach Café

This particular tomato is quite difficult to locate – the entrance is shaded by trees and the flanking buildings seem to dwarf it. Run by expats, it serves some of the best western food on the island. The interior is jungle-green and fire-engine red; the pizzas are especially tasty and the prices are pretty reasonable. Try the toasted sandwiches and bruschetta; the pleasant staff will serve you anything from the breakfast menu all day long as long as the eatery isn’t too crowded.

Breakfast Bar

The Breakfast Bar may not look like much from the outside – it’s a small tropical beach-like hut – but the food is varied and delicious. From roti canai and spicy nasi lemak to delicious fresh baguettes and savoury scrambled eggs; the owner, Mukhtar, is a teh tarik master and more importantly the fare here is affordable.

Places to shop in Langkawi 

Jetty Point Duty Free Complex

Part of the jetty complex itself, this shopping complex has a variety of stores selling handicrafts, perfume, chocolates, liquor and apparel. This makes it a frequent last-minute shopping stopover for visitors before they board the ferry back to the mainland. Housed within are shop lots that stock various duty-free goods as well as cafés, bakeries and fast food outlets such as KFC and Starbucks.

Saga Shopping Center

This shopping complex is one of the major duty-free outlets on the island, offering reasonably priced household items, clothing, decorative ceramics and crystal. If truth be told it carries the same type of merchandise as the other major shopping venues in Langkawi; the smaller stores are more likely to peddle one-of-a-kind goods.

Zeno Duty Free Shopping Centre

This is another store that sells the standard duty-free items; however its confectionary collection tends to contain more than a few hidden treasures. You can even find After Eight chocolate thin mints here at dirt cheap prices; promotions on Cadbury’s chocolates are also simply sinful.

Oriental Village Handicrafts

Located next to the Segway rental store, this is another shop in Oriental Village that offers an assortment of handicrafts and souvenirs. Its one of the better places to get magnets and key chains at reasonable prices; you’re not going to be able to get better prices than the sticker prices so don’t bother haggling with the shop attendants.

Temoyong Night Market

Another one of Pantai Cenang’s shopping highlight is the Temoyong Pasar Malam which takes place on Thursday nights. This local bazaar is a good place to get cheap and authentic Malay food as well as a wide variety of clothes, fresh produce and electronics from the make-shift stalls.

Atma Alam Batik Village

The Atma Alam Batik Village is a batik textile factory located within the Langkawi Village; this cultural arts centre exhibits batik prints and other cultural works. The centre also sells some of these pieces and inside the centre is a large shop which has an extensive range of batik apparel, original oil paintings, souvenirs and mementos for sale.

Teow Soon Huat

Located at the fringes of Kuah, this shopping centre is closer to Padang Matsirat than the illustrious Kuah town. A big duty-free shopping centre with 60 outlets, 12 eateries and a supermarket, it is one of the most popular shopping venues along the Padang Matsirat area. You can get household commodities, a wide variety of apparel and groceries besides the usual staple of tobacco, liquor and confectionery products at this family-oriented complex.
